Beanology: Intro to Coffee

Beanology [bēn-ol-uh-jee] Noun. The branch of knowledge that deals with the understanding of the origins, preparation and enjoyment of coffee. If you are new to coffee, this a great place to start your journey.

Beanology: Introduction to Coffee will explore Specialty coffee’s journey from seed to cup. Class participants will have the opportunity to taste coffees from four different continents and learn how to describe the flavor of each. Participants will also learn how to brew coffee with pour over devises and how manipulating various elements can affect the final cup flavor. There will also be an opportunity to tour our roastery and see the roasting process up close. All participants will leave with a sample pack of assorted coffees to continue the experience at home.

Beanology is ideal for new baristas, entrepreneurs and coffee-lovers alike.

Barista Skills : Foundations
Barista Skills: Foundations

Every Barista needs to start with a strong foundation of skills and techniques. Work hands-on in a small group setting to learn the proven and repeatable steps to extracting rich, delicious espresso, properly steaming velvety smooth milk and bring them together to create luscious lattes and scrumptious cappuccinos

This is the first class that focuses on proven methods for dialing in great espresso extraction and joining the coffee with perfectly textured milk to produce lattes, cappuccinos and more.

Course is based upon using commercial espresso equipment and basic barista techniques commonly used in a coffee shop.

Trail Blaze Coffee: Introduction to Coffee

Every journey has a starting point. Whether you’re a new coffee professional or home coffee enthusiast, this half-day coffee training class is a great place to begin! Follow along specialty coffee’s seed-to-cup journey as we discuss coffee growing, processing, grading, roasting, brewing, and tasting, practicing several useful skills along the way.

This is our most popular coffee training class for good reason: there’s a little bit of everything for those interested in learning more about specialty coffee. We’ll discuss coffee farms and growing from past to present and introduce the ways that terroir, species, and green coffee processing method affects the finished cup. Next, peek inside a roaster and learn about the changes that take place during the roasting process. After calibrating our palates to basic tastes and introducing the Coffee Tasters Flavor Wheel, we’ll practice sensory evaluation in a coffee cupping. We’ll also practice brewing coffee using a manual brewing device. No prior experience is necessary. This Specialty Coffee Association course is the recommended prerequisite for many other SCA coffee training classes.

Successful completion of this course and a short online written exam qualifies the learner for the Specialty Coffee Association’s Introduction to Coffee certificate. Course fee include all SCA Certificate Fees.

Trail Blaze Coffee: Barista Skills Foundation

Master the Seven Essential Elements to brewing great coffee.

Students will learn the recommended process for brewing espresso using various recipes, then practice pulling shots and tasting their results. We’ll taste and discuss properly and improperly prepared espresso and learn how to adjust an espresso grinder to achieve delicious results. Students will practice steaming milk and then use all of their new skills to create various espresso-based beverages. We’ll also learn how to clean espresso machines and grinders.

No prior experience is necessary, though completing Introduction to Coffee is strongly recommended.

Successful completion of this course and a short online written exam qualifies the learner for the Specialty Coffee Association’s Introduction to Coffee certificate. Course fee include all SCA Certificate Fees.

Trail Blaze Coffee: Coffee Brewing Foundation

This course involves lots of hands-on time brewing and tasting filter coffee. We’ll brew coffee using several different brewing devices, including manual and automatic gravity drip and different styles of immersion brewers. We’ll use our senses to evaluate the brewed coffee and discuss what happens when the essential elements of brewing are varied. Learners will leave this course being able to properly use various brewing devices.

No prior experience is necessary, though completing Introduction to Coffee is strongly recommended.

Successful completion of this course and a short online written exam qualifies the learner for the Specialty Coffee Association’s Introduction to Coffee certificate. Course fee include all SCA Certificate Fees.
